[the good shit i'm currently listening to |chains: the beatles]

well, it's time to restart the old livejournal. i want to get this thing going again so i can try my best to keep a journal for the next year...

well, time to fill you in i guess. i graduated from florida state with a degree in secondary mathematics education a couple months ago. i have a job teaching high school math at rickards high school. i start with the county on august first and start at rickards on the seventh. i'm still working for the university tutoring the football players, and i plan on keeping that job while i'm teaching as well. so i'll be working 50+ hours a week...like i was during my internship. and i have also basically been accepted to the florida state secondary mathematics education masters program. i got a 1250 on the GRE (without studying) while the requirement was 1000...and after talking to my advisor, she doesn't see a problem with me getting accepted. so, i'll be taking a class on top of the work this coming fall. exciting.

i'm still dating katie..and we're quickly approaching a year together. we took that huge next step together recently. we got a blockbuster online account together. scary stuff.

i need sleep since i work 8 hours a day for the university and have to be up by 8 am.

goodnight all.

[the good shit i'm currently listening to |what can you do with a general: bing crosby]

well, i'm back from my short hiatus from school. i ended last semister on the dean's list with three A's and a B+. That one stupid homework assignment i messed up on in college geometry cost me straight A's. i'm a little upset at that, i guess. So now, i get to go start interning at chiles tomorrow morning. I'm half looking forward to it, half wanting to just get it over, ten percent still wanting to be lazy and do nothing. but that's 110%! oh well.

i had a good xmas break. after all the news reports, i did the best i could to take christ out of the holidays, just to piss people off, but nobody said anything to me. i got an assload of vinyls. this makes me happy. i got the bright eyes box set, which, i'll admit, i still have yet to listen to on vinyl. i also found an edison 78. i'm wondering how old it actually is. the damn this is about a quarter inch thick. it gives me the idea that it's a reprint of some sort. I seriously doubt that it is one of the ones from the late 1800's, but you never know. I also spent some quality time with the folks. good times.

i got a new phone over xmas break. my parents had went to switch from cingular to sprint last week, so i didn't have a phone for a while there. i hope nobody tried to call me.

i also got to see katie about three times. i wanted it to be longer, but it was better than nothing. i miss her. stupid emotions. she needs to hurry back to tallahassee.\

it's bedtime. i'll update again later.

tonight was a good night. we were supposed to go party at rich's place. by the time levar got his food and we stopped at coldstone rich was leaving for bullwinkle's when we got to his place. so we decides to go back to my place and finish beta testing the new hockey game we invented. it works very well and the season will start as scheduled in two weeks. if anyone wants to join in, let me know. fun times will be had by all.

current music count is at 2853 songs; 177 hours. 9.24 gigs.

i got an external hard drive for my computer, so i am now in the process of loading every cd i have onto my computer. i'm kind of curious to see how much music i actually have. i have barely started loading the cds and i'm already over 100 hours of music. any guess as to how much i actually have? i'd like to hear them.

i have nothing else to post about.

i got a 95 on my first esol test. i seem to do well in classes where the teacher preaches to be different from the norm and get low b's in classes where the teacher wants the student to stick to the path that has been "proven" to work. i guess i give off a vibe that i'm a bit off the beaten path.

i'm going home for weekend as of tomorrow mizzle. it shall be a nice weekend with the folks and the puffster.

why are you scared to dream of God when it's salvation that you want?

rich and i went to the new guitar store in the tallahassee mall. i got a capo for my guitars. it's fun to play with. i really only know a couple songs that it can be used for. but it does make those songs easier to play.

i think lauren is getting annoyed with me.

so my car battery died again. 6 months after replacing the battery, i got to go back to the place and spend another 4 hours dealing with changing a car battery. longest trip to walmart i ever made.

there is a fly in my room that i can't catch or get rid of. it's not a big fly, just some annoying little thing that makes an appearance now and then. i think i'm going to give up on getting rid of it and just name it charles and offer it a sacrifice or something. too bad my sacrificial robe is at the cleaners.

had a nice gathering of souls friday night. had some cool people come over and everything went well. a good time was had by all. the only set back was some foreign kid puking all over my bathroom and not cleaning one bit of it.

nobody calls me a fizzle and gets away with it. except that one guy who called me a fizzle and got away with it. well, acutally, he was the only one who ever called me a fizzle. after today, only half the people who have called me a fizzle will have gotten away with it.

i still miss lauren...even if i do make her mad

i took the general knowledge of the ftce (florida teacher certification exam) on saturday. easy as pie...i think. the 100 minute math section took me 30. it was that easy. your 3-dimensional geometry questions can't stump the great math wizard. the distance formula for 3-d is (x^2 + y^2 + z^2)^1/2. if you'd like a proof, i can show you. fool.

[the good shit i'm currently listening to |cover me: mae]

i am currently working on a 10 page paper on johannes kepler. his was is just amazing to me. read what i have so far.

Since the dawn of time, man has looked to the sky attempting to make sense of a seemingly chaotic void. Dots of white energy dancing motionlessly across endless black in a way that seems to have no pattern or geometric sequence to it at all. Ideas developed over time ranging from spheres of canvas with holes punched in it rotating around the earth, to an endless void with the earth at the center, to, at the time of Johannes Kepler, a crazy new idea of a sun-centered universe. Many tried to come up with a solution to the universe, and all had failed up to this point.
After being frustrated after his first year teaching in Gratz, Johannes Kepler reverted back to thinking of astronomical conjectures he delved into during his younger years (Koestler 43). These conjectures were now much more prominent on his mind, now. A breakthrough to one of his major problems came while teaching one of his classes. “But now these speculations were becoming both more intense, and more mathematical in character. A year after his arrival…he was drawing a figure on the blackboard for his class, when an idea suddenly struck him with such force that he felt he was holding the key to the secret of creation in his hand” (Koestler 43). Kepler was so excited about his breakthrough that he was quoted at the time as saying “The delight that I took in my discovery, I shall never be able to describe in words” (Koestler 43). His possible solution would become the main focus in his life and was a primary inspiration for him, and his infamous laws of planetary motion would eventually spawn from this one idea (Koestler 43-46).
The basic thought of Kepler was that if God was a perfect being, that he would create a perfect universe (Lorenzo, http://usuarios.advance.com). The idea was centuries old that the universe was created, or built, around symmetrical figures (triangles, squares, pentagons, etc.) (Koestler 43). Around 480 B.C., Greek Mathematics began to center around understanding the function of the universe. The Sophist School, which was centered in Athens around 480 B.C., just after the defeat of the Persians, gave much emphasis to abstract reasoning and using this reason to understand the function of the universe (Allen, http://www.math.tamu.edu/~don.allen/history/greekorg/greekorg.html). Kepler read many works of the Greek mathematicians for inspiration.
Along with the Greek works, Kepler learned much from his teacher in astronomy, Maestlin about Copernicus. Kepler agreed with Copernicus on his views about a heliocentric universe “for physical, or if you prefer, metaphysical reasons” (Koestler 44).
Kepler then began to wonder why there were only six planets, and why the distances and velocities were how they were, which, in turn began his mission to discover the laws of planetary motion (Koestler 44).
The first thing Kepler attempted was to see if different orbits of planets were perhaps two, three, or four times as big as one another. But this was to no avail. Kepler was quoted to saying “I lost much time on this task, on this play with numbers; but I could find no order either in the numerical proportions or in the deviations from such proportions” (Koestler 44). After noticing that the known planet orbits did not satisfy any pattern for his hypothetical perfect universe, he attempted to add a planet in between Mercury and Venus, as well as in between Mars and Jupiter that were possibly too small for him to see, and then recalculating possible patterns for orbits. Again, Kepler found no pattern that could give a “sensible sequence of ratios” (Koestler 44).
While giving the lecture to his class mentioned before, Kepler made a discovery. On the blackboard, he had drawn a circle inscribed in a triangle which was inscribed inside of another circle. This figure drawn is how he made is discovery. “As he looked at the two circles, it suddenly struck him that their ratios were the same as those of the orbits of Saturn and Jupiter” (Koestler 45). Using Saturn and Jupiter as the “first” ratio between orbits, Kepler tried inscribing a pentagon between Mars and Earth, the “second” ratio, and then between Earth and Venus, a hexagon (Koestler 44). This method did not quite fit the ratio, but Kepler felt he was very close (Koestler 44-45).
The platonic solids, also called regular solids or polygons, are convex polyhedra made with equal faces of congruent polygons. Euclid proved that there are exactly five regular polygons: the cube, icosahedron, dodecahedron, octahedron, and tetrahedron. Plato assigned each of the regular polygons an element in one of his works. The cube received earth, the tetrahedron got fire, the icosahedron got water, the octahedron got air, and the dodecahedron was everything that made up the heavens (Koestler 46). Cromwell states that in order for a solid to be a regular polygon it has the following qualities: all of the vertices lie on a sphere, all of the dihedral angles are equal, all of the vertex figures are regular polygons, all the solid angles are equivalent, and all of the vertices are surrounded by the same number of faces (77-78).
And using the regular polygons, Kepler managed to come up with a solution to his “Cosmic Mystery;” or at least his solution seemed to fit. “Into the orbit, or sphere, of Saturn, he inscribed a cube; and into the cube another sphere, which was that of Jupiter. Inscribed in that was the tetrahedron, and inscribed in that the sphere of Mars. Between the spheres of Mars and Earth came the dodecahedron; between Earth and Venus the iconsahedron; between Venus and Mercury the octahedron” (Koestler 47). So, it seemed that Kepler managed to solve the mystery of the universe. But would his hypothesis stand up to further research in the future?
